The Box Was Meant for One, but the Terrier and Bunny Had Other Ideas

Every pet knows that a cardboard box is the finest piece of furniture ever made. A tricolor Jack Russell Terrier has draped himself over the back edge of one, his brown-and-black ears flopped forward and his dark eyes watchful. Down in front, a small brown bunny named Clover sits snugly inside the box, nestled on a bed of hay with her ears upright.

The box has folded flaps and a few bits of straw sticking out. Behind it, a gray blanket and a rope toy lie on the floor, and a basket of laundry sits in the corner. The two of them are packed in tightly, which is exactly how they like it.

Cats get most of the credit for loving boxes, but many dogs and rabbits enjoy them too. Enclosed spaces feel safe, and rabbits in particular like having a spot to duck into. A plain cardboard box can make a great hideout, but remove any tape, staples, or plastic first, and keep an eye on chewing, since swallowed cardboard can cause problems. Jack Russells are lively, clever dogs that love games and new challenges, so a box can also be a fun puzzle. If you are not sure whether a hideout is safe, ask your vet. Replace the box when it gets soggy or torn.

It may be a simple box, but the two of them are treating it like a palace. If it fits, they sit.
