The Jack Russell Did Not Budge, Even With a Calf Stepping Over Him
The calf is trying very hard to cross the room, and the Jack Russell is not going to be an obstacle. A tricolor terrier lies on the floor looking up with calm, bright eyes, his front legs stretched out, while a brown-and-white calf steps over his back with her hooves placed carefully and her head low. A basket, a stack of towels and an open door fill the background.
Jack Russell Terriers are normally full of energy, so lying still like this is impressive. They are smart, determined dogs who need lots of play, walks and mental challenges, and they often enjoy a calm moment when their needs are met. Many terriers are also very patient with those they love.
It is a good reminder that hooves are sharp and heavy, and even gentle steps can hurt a small dog. When a small dog shares space with a calf, it is wise to keep him out of the way of those feet and to supervise all interactions. Giving a dog a safe spot to retreat to is always smart.
Clover is working on her balance, and her terrier buddy is taking part in the lesson. Even the toughest little dogs are sometimes very good sports. It is a little lesson in patience, and the terrier passes it easily. Both of them seem to find the whole thing wonderfully funny, in their own quiet way.
