The Box Was Meant for One Dog. The German Shepherd Made Room Anyway.

Every cat owner knows the power of an empty box, and apparently dogs and calves know it too. A black German Shepherd has climbed into a big cardboard box and found it a snug fit, and a brown-and-white calf has squeezed in right beside him with her head resting against his shoulder. The room around them is lived-in, with a plant on the shelf, slippers by the wall and a bright window behind them.

German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal and often very protective. They do best with something to do, whether training, walks or puzzle toys, and a dog this relaxed usually has had enough exercise to enjoy a good rest. Their natural watchfulness is why they often act as gentle guardians over smaller friends.

Dogs and cats both seem to love enclosed spaces, and the reason is simple: tight, cozy places feel secure. A box is also a decent insulator, which makes it appealing in cooler weather. If you give your pet a box, check that there are no staples or tape, and leave out the plastic wrap and cords that could tangle.

Whatever the breed, the logic is the same: if it fits, you sit in it. The calf, Clover, seems to have taken the shoulder as a pillow, and her dark-coated roommate does not appear to mind at all.
