Two Spectators at the Fence: A Shiba Inu and a Lamb Watch Hens
Behind a wire and wooden fence, a few brown hens pick around the yard, and two spectators watch intently. A cream Shiba Inu, with a fox-like face and alert ears, leans on the fence with a half-open mouth. Beside him, a white lamb presses her nose near the wire, equally focused. Rubber boots, a watering can and a pile of garden things sit behind them. It looks like the best show on the farm, and neither has any intention of looking away. A hen steps close to the wire, and both heads turn in perfect unison.
Shiba Inus are small, independent Japanese dogs with a bold, cat-like personality. They are smart but can be stubborn, which makes early training and consistent routines helpful. Many Shibas have a strong prey drive, so chickens and small animals should be kept separated by a secure fence and watched closely. A good fence is a kindness for everyone. Lambs are curious and social and love watching other animals. Keeping dogs and poultry separate prevents stress and injuries, and that is just common sense on any farm. Ask your vet if you need help with training. Rewarding calm looking and quiet behavior near the fence is a good way to teach a dog good manners.
The hens carry on with their scratching, unaware that they have an audience.
