Two Sleepy Heads Shared One Woven Rug as the Evening Settled In
Stretched out on a woven rug on a covered porch, a brindle and white Bulldog sleeps with his jowls spread on the floor and his big paws forward. Right beside him, a brown and white calf lies with its chin resting on the rug, eyes closed. The warm glow of a porch light touches the rough boards behind them, and the yard is dim and quiet beyond.
Bulldogs spend a lot of the day sleeping, which suits a calf who does the same. Young calves can nap for much of the day when they are very small. Bulldogs like soft, cool spots because they are sensitive to heat, and a covered porch in the evening is a good choice. Keep fresh water close and keep the dog from overexerting itself, since flat-faced breeds can have breathing trouble. Talk to your vet about weight and exercise. If a calf and dog are going to share space, keep both supervised and make sure the calf has proper shelter and bedding of its own for the night.
The two breathe softly together, and their sleeping faces look remarkably alike, both a bit wrinkled and both a bit rumpled. It is a sweet end to a long day. The yard is quiet, and everything else can wait until morning. Tomorrow will bring chores and sunshine, but tonight belongs to the naps.
