The Schnauzer Found a Cardboard Box, and a Calf Moved In
The biggest cardboard box in the house has been claimed by two very unexpected tenants. A black and silver Miniature Schnauzer sits upright with his gray beard and bushy brows giving him a look of great wisdom, while a brown and white calf curls beside him, nose gently turned toward his. A pile of blankets, a basket, and a scatter of shoes fill the room behind them.
Boxes are irresistible to animals, and the reason is simple: they feel safe. A snug, enclosed space can calm a nervous pet because it limits what can come at them from behind. Schnauzers are lively, smart terriers who often like to keep a close eye on their home, and a box makes a good lookout. A calf, though, will quickly outgrow any cardboard box and needs proper bedding and shelter in a barn or pen. If you ever share a house with a pet that loves boxes, just check for staples and tape, which can be hazardous if chewed. A fresh, empty box can be a very inexpensive toy.
The Schnauzer wears the face of someone who has just welcomed a guest and is waiting to see what they will say. The calf, meanwhile, looks perfectly at home. It is a funny, charming little scene about how animals share the best spots. There is always room for one more friend in a good box.
