The Tough Guard Dog Fell Asleep on the Job, and Nobody Minded

AI imagerottweilerhorse and dogbasket nap

The biggest guard dog on the farm has fallen asleep on the job, and he doesn't regret it. A black and tan Rottweiler lies curled in a big wicker basket, his strong head resting on a cream blanket, eyes closed, chest rising and falling. Copper is snuggled up next to him, small and chestnut and just as sound asleep, ears tucked in. A hallway and a doorway stretch behind them, with a laundry hamper standing nearby.

Rottweilers have a reputation as serious guard dogs, but with training and socialization many are affectionate, loyal and gentle with their families. They are strong and intelligent, so they do best with an experienced owner who provides steady training and daily exercise. Early socialization with other animals matters a lot, and it is always wise to supervise any interaction between a large dog and another species. A sleeping dog often means a dog who feels secure in his home. Dogs may spend half the day or more asleep, so a long nap in a snug basket is a normal and healthy way to recharge.

The big dog has the look of a gentle giant at rest. Whatever dangers were lurking near the barn can wait until later. For now, there is one sleepy horse to protect and one very comfortable basket in which to do it.
