The Lab Had the Biggest Smile in the Barn, and a Horse Beside Him

AI imagelabrador retrieverhorse and dogbarn

The corner of the barn is warm, quiet and smells like fresh straw, and two friends have decided it belongs to them. A yellow Labrador Retriever sits at the front of the stall with his mouth open in a goofy smile and his tongue just showing, looking straight ahead. Behind him, Copper the chestnut horse stands in his leather halter, head low and calm right next to his friend. The wooden walls and the pile of golden hay make a snug little room.

Labs are cheerful, social dogs that love to be near their people and other animals, so a barn companion suits them well. They can also be enthusiastic eaters, and hay, grain and horse feed are not always safe for dogs, so keep food storage closed and talk to your vet about what a dog can safely eat. Barns are full of interesting smells and sounds, and a dog should always have a clear place to stand away from hooves. Giving a dog his own bed or blanket in the corner helps him feel secure. Labs usually love to learn, which makes them easy to train to stay out of the way.

The Lab beams like he has just been told the best news of the week. Copper, as always, is the calm one. Together they make a very good team, and a very good corner.
