Two Spectators, One Fence and a Whole Flock of Chickens
The chickens are the best show in the yard, and two spectators are watching every move. A brindle and white Bulldog sits in the dirt with his wrinkled face turned up and his jowls relaxed, studying the flock. Beside him, Copper the chestnut horse leans over the wooden fence, ears forward and eyes alert. Hens in red, black and white peck busily behind the rails, completely unaware of the attention.
Bulldogs are calm, sturdy and often a little stubborn, with a loving nature that makes them wonderful family pets. Their short noses mean they can overheat easily and may snore, so they need shade and rest on warm days. Many dogs are fascinated by chickens, and that is natural, but it is wise to supervise carefully and keep the dog on a leash or behind a fence. Chasing can scare the birds and cause injury, and a calm sit-and-watch routine is a good habit to teach. Horses and chickens often share farmyards peacefully. If you have both dogs and poultry, talk to your vet or a trainer about keeping everyone safe.
For the Bulldog and the horse, this is a nature documentary. The chickens strut and scratch, and the audience stays politely behind the fence. It might not be the most exciting program, but it is theirs, and they plan to watch it all afternoon.
