The Garden Inspectors Arrived: One Bernese, One Chestnut Horse

The vegetable garden is in full leaf, and the inspection team has arrived. A tricolor Bernese Mountain Dog stands among the plants with his mouth in a happy half-smile, black and white and rust-colored fur glossy in the sun. Beside him, Copper the chestnut horse leans in with ears pricked, sniffing a bright row of herbs. A silver watering can sits on a post in the background, and tomato stakes rise behind the beds.

Bernese Mountain Dogs were bred in the Swiss Alps as farm dogs, so a garden and a barn are exactly where they feel at home. They are known for being gentle, affectionate and loyal, though they can be slow to mature and need steady training from the start. Their thick coat sheds a lot and they do not handle heat well, so shade and water are a must. When dogs and horses wander through a garden, it is smart to watch what they nibble, as some plants and foods can harm them. If your pet eats something questionable, call your vet. Otherwise, a walk among the vegetables is great exercise.

The Bernese looks delighted to be on garden duty, and Copper seems to approve of the herbs. It may be the most polite inspection in history. The tomatoes will have to fend for themselves, but the company is very good.
