A Saint Bernard Puppy and a Pony Inspect the Lettuce Patch Together
The raised garden bed is full of lettuce, parsley and bright orange marigolds, and two inspectors have come to check it out. A Saint Bernard puppy rests his huge white paws on the wood, tongue out and head tilted, while a pony with a pale, wispy mane leans in next to him. The soil is dark and freshly turned, and the wooden fence and potted plants line the yard behind them. They look like gardeners reviewing their work.
Saint Bernard puppies grow into very large dogs, so early training in good manners, such as not jumping up and not pulling on a leash, is a big help. They are gentle and sociable, and they like being part of the family's activities. Gardens are fun for pets, but some plants can be harmful. Marigolds are generally mild, but many other garden plants, bulbs and fertilizers can be dangerous, so it is wise to check with your vet before letting a pet nibble. Ponies also like to nibble greens, so a garden bed is best viewed from a respectful distance.
Whatever the verdict on the lettuce is, the two inspectors are not telling. They watch the bed with great seriousness, shoulder to shoulder. A garden is always better with company, even if the company is only there to supervise. The lettuce is probably quite nervous, but the marigolds look unbothered, glowing orange in the afternoon light as the two inspectors carry on.
