Frost Covered the Glass, and Two Unlikely Friends Stayed Warm Inside

Outside the window, frost has painted the glass white and turned the trees into gray lace. Inside, a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel sits upright on a woolly blanket with her long chestnut ears hanging down, gazing off to the side, while a brown and white calf rests close against her with a wide, curious eye. Knitted throws are piled behind them and a wooden window frame holds in the warmth. The spaniel is Posy, the calf is Maple.

Cavaliers were bred as companion dogs, and it shows. They are famously sweet and people-oriented, and they usually get along well with other animals. Like many companion breeds, they enjoy being close to their family and don't love being left alone for long stretches. Winter is also a good time to remember that all pets appreciate a draft-free spot, and young animals in particular should have somewhere warm to rest.

If your dog likes watching the world from a window, a cushioned perch can make the view even better. Keep any cords or heaters out of reach, and check that the sill is stable. Regular grooming also matters for a long-haired spaniel, since feathery ears and legs tangle easily.

Posy and Maple have the best seats in the house, and a quiet winter day stretches out in front of them. There is nowhere else they would rather be.
