The Picnic Blanket Was Meant for Lunch. The Saint Bernard Had a Different Idea.
The picnic blanket was spread out for lunch, but the guests of honor have settled in without any sandwiches. A big red and white Saint Bernard lies across a red gingham cloth with her heavy head resting on the checks and her soft brown eyes half closed. A little brown and white calf lies close in front of her, chin on the fabric. Garden pots and a quiet yard stretch out behind them. We'll name the Saint Bernard Gracie and the calf Maple.
Saint Bernards were bred in the Swiss Alps and are famous for their gentle, patient natures. They are large, powerful dogs with a mellow temperament, and many love spending time with their families and other animals. Their size means they need space and sturdy training, and they tend to drool. They are also sensitive to heat because of their thick coats, so shade and water are a must.
Picnics are a lovely outing for dogs, but a few precautions go a long way. Keep chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and anything with artificial sweeteners well away from pets, and pack plenty of water for the dog. Check with your vet if you are unsure about a snack.
Gracie takes up most of the blanket, and Maple has no complaints. Some picnics are best enjoyed without any food at all.
