The Sphynx Cat Was in Charge of the Garden. The Ducklings Had Questions.
Garden duty has been handed to a very unusual crew. A pink, hairless Sphynx cat crouches among the seedlings with her big ears flared and her amber eyes fixed on the ground, and a cluster of fluffy yellow ducklings scatters around her paws, pecking at the soil and the green leaves. A tipped-over terracotta pot, a hose, and a few dried leaves complete the scene. We'll call the Sphynx Mocha, and she looks as if she is in charge.
Sphynx cats are known for their lack of fur, but not for a lack of personality. They are curious, affectionate, and very social, and they often follow their people around like a shadow. Because they have no coat, they feel the cold easily and need a warm indoor home, and their skin needs gentle care and sun protection if they go outside. They also tend to get along well with other animals when introduced slowly.
Ducklings are a delight, but they need a lot of care. They need warmth, clean water, and proper feed, and they should be kept safe from predators, including cats, until they are grown. If you have a cat and young ducklings at home, supervise every meeting and keep them in separate spaces when you cannot watch. A vet who knows birds can offer good advice.
Mocha keeps a calm, careful watch, and the ducklings paddle about as though the garden were theirs. It is a bright, busy morning in the beds.
