A Bernese Puppy and a Pony Made a Big Splash in the Creek
Water flies in every direction as the Bernese Mountain Dog puppy splashes through a shallow creek with his tongue out and his ears flapping. A shaggy cream pony walks alongside him, picking her way carefully through the water. Behind them are patches of green grass, a garden hose and the back of a house. The pup's black, white and rust coat gets darker as it soaks, and he looks delighted.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are large, gentle, affectionate dogs bred for farm work in the Swiss Alps. They have thick coats and prefer cooler weather, so they often enjoy playing in water. Their puppies are clumsy and playful, and need plenty of rest as they grow. Creek play is fun, but check the water first: moving water can be deeper or colder than it looks, and stagnant water can carry germs that make pets sick. Dry your dog well afterward, especially around the ears, and call your vet if your dog develops a cough or upset stomach after swimming. Ponies are sure-footed and usually calm around water, but slippery rocks can be a problem. Choose a safe, shallow spot and supervise all the splashing. Always keep an eye on the weather and the current before heading to any creek.
The creek is cold, the sun is bright and the splashes are huge. Nobody is thinking about drying off yet.
