A Corgi Puppy and a Pony Checked the Garden Rows at Dusk
Dusk settles over the vegetable patch, and a lantern glows warmly on the fence post. A Corgi puppy sits among the raised beds with his big ears pointed straight up and a bright, curious face. A shaggy brown pony stands behind him, her head lowered to inspect the leafy greens. Bean poles lean over the rows, and the soil is dark and damp from a recent watering. It looks like the best kind of evening patrol.
Vegetable gardens are full of tempting smells, but not everything in them is safe for pets. Onions, garlic, chives and the leaves and stems of tomato plants can be harmful to dogs, and ponies should not eat nightshade plants either. Fencing off the garden is the easiest solution, with a gate to keep curious noses out. If your pet does eat something questionable, call your vet or a poison control line promptly. Corgi puppies enjoy digging and exploring, so they may need some redirection. Fresh veggies can be a healthy treat for some animals in small amounts, such as carrots or green beans, but check with your vet first. A little planning makes garden evenings safe and fun. Keep a close eye on both animals while they wander the rows.
The lantern flickers, the lettuce rustles and the two inspectors move on to the next row. The garden has never been so well supervised.
