The Porch Was Decorated for Halloween. The Smallest Bat Showed Up on the Walkway.
Two black felt bat wings spread out from the shoulders of a striped silver kitten, giving her the look of a very small, very fluffy creature of the night. She sits on the wooden walkway with her paws together and her golden-green eyes fixed straight ahead, ears up and whiskers forward. Behind her, the house is decked out for the season: a navy front door with a wreath of autumn leaves and mini pumpkins, a smiling jack-o'-lantern on the step, wispy fake cobwebs on the column, corn stalks tied to the porch and pots of rust-colored mums by the fence.
A pair of lightweight wings that fasten with a soft strap is one of the gentler costume options for cats, since it leaves the head, ears and legs free. Even so, many cats only tolerate costumes for a moment. Watch body language: flattened ears, a twitching tail, crouching or trying to wriggle out are all signs to take it off. Decorations like fake spider webs can be a hazard too, because the stretchy fibers can tangle around paws or be swallowed. Keep them high, out of reach or skip them altogether in homes with curious kittens.
For one quick moment, though, this little bat looks ready to take flight. Silver stripes and spooky wings make for one of the cutest night creatures of the season.
