A Tortoiseshell Kitten Stands Guard on the Snowy Porch Steps
A strand of pine garland trails along the snowy steps, and a tortoiseshell kitten sits beside it with her golden eyes focused on something off-camera. Her coat is a rich mix of dark brown, black and copper, and a dusting of snow clings to the grey boards beneath her paws. Behind her, the porch railing and a warm lit window suggest that a cozy room is just steps away.
Pine garland smells wonderful, but it's something to watch around cats. Fir and pine needles can irritate the mouth and stomach if chewed, and the oils in some greenery are not good for pets. Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia are among the festive plants often listed as unsafe too, so many owners choose artificial garland placed out of reach. A kitten on a cold porch shouldn't stay long, since small bodies lose heat quickly, but a short look around in the snow can be an adventure.
The little tortoiseshell sits there like a tiny guard, watching for the mail carrier or a passing squirrel. We'll call her Ember, because her coat looks like glowing coals. In a minute she'll hop down the steps and shake off the cold, and then it's back inside for warmth and a snack. The garland smells of pine and the air smells of snow, and for a kitten that's quite an adventure for one afternoon.
