A Russian Blue Kitten Marches Off With the Candy Cane

AI imagerussian bluecandy canekitten

She isn't sure what she's carrying, but she's certain it's hers. A blue-grey kitten with bright green eyes sits on a cream carpet holding a red-and-white striped candy cane crosswise in her mouth like a tiny trophy. Behind her a plaid blanket, a laundry basket and the hallway with a twinkling tree create a warm, lived-in scene, and her stare says she's daring someone to ask for it back.

Candy canes are not safe for cats. They're mostly sugar, and some sugar-free candies contain xylitol, an ingredient that is very dangerous for dogs and not something any pet should have. Peppermint oil can also upset a pet's stomach, and hard candy can break into sharp pieces or become a choking risk. If a kitten finds one, gently swap it for a toy and put the candy out of reach. A hanging candy cane on the tree is best kept high. If she ate part of one, call your vet for advice.

Russian Blues are said to be intelligent and playful, and this one has clearly figured out how to snatch the best loot in the house. Let's call her Pepper. We hope someone offers her a feather toy soon, because the candy cane is going back to the tree where it belongs. She'll be the first to tell you that sharing candy is not part of her plan.
