Orange Pumpkin Lights Went Up on the Porch Railing. Somebody Had to Inspect Them.
Strings of little orange pumpkin lights loop along the porch railing, glowing softly even in the afternoon sun. Below them, on the weathered wooden boards, a slim kitten with a warm, ticked coat sits upright and gazes up with pale green eyes. His oversized ears are angled forward, his white chin is lifted, and he wears the alert, interested look so typical of his kind. All around him the porch is dressed for fall, with pots of mums, two small pumpkins, a jack-o'-lantern, gardening gloves, and a watering can resting by the steps.
Holiday string lights add a lot of charm, but cords and plugs are tempting for kittens who love to chew and bat at dangling things. Biting an electrical cord can cause burns to the mouth or more serious injury, so it's worth running cords where pets can't reach them, using cord covers, and unplugging lights when no one is around. Check strands for frayed wires or broken bulbs before hanging them. Active, curious breeds like the Abyssinian are especially likely to investigate anything new, so a quick pet-proofing walk-through after decorating is time well spent. If a pet ever chews a cord, unplug it before touching the animal, then call your vet.
This little one seems content just to admire the glow from below. He's found a sunny spot, a good view, and plenty of autumn excitement to keep him busy.
The lights twinkle, the leaves fall, and a small amber kitten makes the porch feel like home.
