The Beagle Sat by the Wreath-Covered Door, Waiting for Someone
Golden evening light catches the Beagle's long brown ears and white chest as he sits on the doormat in front of a blue-grey door. A wreath of pine cones and a plaid bow hangs behind him, a pair of muddy boots rests against the siding, and a small evergreen sits in a pot at the edge. His brown eyes look into the distance with a hopeful expression that says someone is coming home.
Beagles are friendly, curious scent hounds, and they love to follow their noses. A Beagle at the front door is often listening for footsteps or sniffing out visitors. Because they were bred to track and tend to be food-motivated, they can get into trouble around holiday trays and treats, so keep chocolate, cookies and anything with xylitol out of reach. Beagles also have a tendency to wander after interesting smells, which makes a fenced yard or a leash important. Winter weather can be chilly for them, and a short walk followed by a warm towel-off is usually plenty.
Let's call him Hank. He's keeping watch with all the patience of a dog who knows the family will be back and that a snack is almost certainly part of the plan. For now he sits proudly on the mat, the official greeter of a home dressed up for the holidays.
