The Halloween Spider Web Caught Something Much Bigger Than a Fly
This spider web caught something far bigger than a fly. A brindle and white Boston Terrier puppy lies on a wooden porch draped in stretchy white fake cobweb, the wispy strands wrapped over its head, around its ears, and across its paws. Little black plastic spiders cling to the web near its ear and front feet. The puppy's big round eyes look up with an expression that is half confused and half pleading for rescue. Behind it, a doorway, a wicker basket with a plaid blanket, a pair of sneakers, a small pumpkin, and a jacket on a hook set the Halloween scene.
Stretchy fake spider webs are one of the most popular Halloween decorations, and also one of the most hazardous for pets. The thin fibers can wrap around legs or necks and are easy for curious puppies to chew and swallow, which may lead to choking or intestinal blockages. Small plastic spiders are a choking risk, too. If you use this kind of decoration, place it well above pet height or skip it in areas your dog can reach. And if your pet seems to have swallowed any, contact your vet promptly.
Fortunately, this little Boston seems more puzzled than troubled, and a gentle untangling will have it free in no time. Next year, maybe the spiders get a higher shelf and the puppy gets a costume instead.
