The Saint Bernard Puppy Took the Window Seat and Wouldn't Budge

Winter has painted lacy frost across the glass, and a young Saint Bernard sits right below it like a small, furry doorman. His red and white coat is soft and thick, his dark face has the gentle, slightly worried brows of the breed, and his front paws are planted neatly on a worn rug. A homemade evergreen wreath hangs in the window beside him, jackets are hooked on the wall and a blue rope toy lies close by in case he gets bored of looking out.

Saint Bernards are famous giants, historically linked to mountain hospice work in the Alps, and they are usually calm, patient and gentle with their families. Puppies grow fast, so a large breed needs a balanced diet suited to its size and plenty of sleep, and joints are best protected by avoiding too much jumping or hard stair climbing while young. Their thick coats suit cold weather, but they overheat easily, so a heated entryway can be a bit warm for them. A puppy who sits watching windows is often waiting for a familiar face, so a few minutes of calm attention before and after outings helps build confidence.

The wreath, the frost and the soft ears all make a pretty winter picture. If the snow keeps falling, this puppy may just stay at his post until somebody invites him out for a first real romp in it.
