The Cornucopia Was Overflowing and a Poodle Puppy Was Taking Notes
The cornucopia is overflowing, and a curly chocolate Poodle puppy is considering whether it is dinner or decoration. He sits at the edge of the wooden table with his soft brown ears hanging and his dark eyes aimed at a spill of pumpkins, pears, red apples, nuts and a cluster of dark grapes. Wheat stalks and eucalyptus leaves frame the harvest basket, and behind him the room is full of coats, plants and an afternoon glow.
Harvest centerpieces can be tricky around dogs. Grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs, even in small amounts, so keep them well out of reach. Nuts can also cause stomach upset or blockages, and decorative gourds are not meant to be eaten. A safe alternative is to place the centerpiece in the middle of the table where a puppy cannot reach it, or to use artificial fruit. Poodles are intelligent and trainable, and early lessons in staying away from the table pay off. Offering a puzzle toy filled with a bit of plain pumpkin gives a smart puppy something to do while the family sets the table.
The puppy is only looking this time, and he does it with such neat manners that it is hard to scold him. Thanksgiving has plenty of good things in it, and a chocolate-brown curly sitter makes the table feel a bit more like home.
