The Turkey Was Roasting, and a Pomeranian Puppy Had Pulled Up a Spot on the Floor
The oven light is on, the turkey is turning golden and a cream Pomeranian puppy has taken up a position on the kitchen floor to keep a close eye on it. His fluffy tail curls behind him, his dark nose is pointed toward the glowing oven and his ears stand up like two soft triangles. A cutting board with garlic and onions rests beside him, a blue towel is draped nearby and a bowl of apples sits on the counter.
A hot oven and a busy kitchen are not great places for a small dog. Pets can be burned by oven doors or tripped over by the cook carrying hot dishes, so a baby gate or a bed in another room is a good idea. Onions and garlic, which are on the board next to him, can be harmful to dogs if eaten, and fatty drippings can upset a puppy's stomach. Pomeranians are tiny, bright and bold, and they often act much larger than they are. Giving a little dog a chew toy and a spot away from the stove keeps him close without being underfoot.
The turkey is nearly done and the puppy has waited so patiently. A small, round fluff of a dog sitting guard by the oven is just one more reason that the kitchen on Thanksgiving is the heart of the home.
