A Husky Puppy Asked Very Politely for the Mashed Potatoes
Pale blue eyes look upward with a very polite plea. A black and white Siberian Husky puppy sits beside a plate of mashed potatoes topped with melting butter and a sprinkle of herbs, his nose raised toward the table's edge. A plaid blanket, napkins, a glass and scattered autumn leaves crowd the surface, and sunlight comes through a curtained window behind him.
Plain mashed potatoes are not poisonous, but the rich versions served at holiday meals, with butter, cream, salt, garlic and onion, are not a good snack for a dog. Too much fat can cause an upset stomach or, in some cases, a serious condition called pancreatitis, so it is best to resist those hopeful eyes and offer something safe instead, like a bit of plain cooked carrot or a dog biscuit. Huskies are intelligent, social dogs with plenty of energy and a talent for charming their families, so training that keeps them busy helps. Teaching 'go to your bed' during dinner gives a begging puppy a clear job.
The potatoes will go to the people, and the puppy will get his treat in time. His polite stare is hard to resist, but a good family knows how to share the moment instead of the meal. A cuddle on the couch after dinner will do nicely, and a safe chew on the rug will be even better.
