The Best Seat at Thanksgiving Dinner Was Under the Table
The best seat at the Thanksgiving table might be beneath it. A fluffy black and white Havanese puppy sprawls on the wooden floor among a forest of shoes, socks and slippers, his curly ears falling over his paws and his nose lifted toward the sound of cutlery. A tablecloth hangs over the edge above him, a few crumbs lie on the boards and the warm light of the room spills in from the window.
Under-table spots are a classic dog hangout at mealtimes, since a dog is close to the family and the smells while staying out of the way. It does come with risks. Dropped food can include onions, grapes, bones or sweets that are unsafe for dogs, so ask everyone to keep scraps to themselves and pick up crumbs quickly. A puppy underfoot can also be stepped on, so it helps to give him a bed in a quiet corner of the room with a chew toy. Havanese are small, cheerful, social dogs known for loving company, and many follow their people from room to room. Short, positive training sessions work well with this clever breed.
The puppy has found a cozy spot in the middle of everyone, and he appears to have no plans to leave. Overhead, the feast goes on, and below, the happiest guest is the one who simply gets to be close to the family.
