The Scarecrow Stood Guard While a Grey Tabby Slept on the Job

The scarecrow was supposed to guard the porch, but the real guard has fallen asleep. A grey tabby cat lies stretched out on the weathered boards with his chin on the edge of the step, eyes closed and ears relaxed, right next to a straw-stuffed scarecrow in a plaid shirt and a floppy hat. Straw spills from the sleeves, corn stalks lean against the post and a pot of orange mums glows by the door.

Cats nap often, usually between twelve and sixteen hours a day, and sunny porch spots are a favorite. A sleeping cat is a comfortable cat, and it is a good sign that he feels safe. Scarecrow decorations are usually harmless, but straw can be dusty and can irritate a cat's eyes or nose, or be chewed and swallowed. Make sure that the decoration is stable and cannot fall on a sleeping pet. If your cat enjoys porch naps, keep him supervised, with ID and a microchip, and bring him indoors when the evening cools. Grey tabbies are a classic coloring and often have easygoing, affectionate personalities.

The scarecrow stands guard and the cat dreams on, and it is hard to say which is more peaceful. Even the neighborhood trick-or-treaters might tiptoe a little, so as not to wake him, and the scarecrow certainly will not tell.
