A Scottish Fold Wore a Lion Mane and Ruled the Backyard

AI imagescottish foldlion costumehalloween yard

There is a new king of the jungle, and he lives in a backyard. A silver tabby Scottish Fold sits on the lawn wearing a fuzzy golden mane that frames his round face, his folded ears peeking through the fur and his orange eyes wide and serious. Autumn leaves scatter the grass, a wooden fence lines the yard and a small pumpkin sits near the house.

Scottish Folds have folded ears and round faces, and they are usually sweet, calm cats. The same gene that makes the fold can affect cartilage elsewhere in the body, so talk to your vet about breed-specific health and regular check-ups. A lion mane costume is a popular choice, but check that the mane does not cover the eyes or ears, that the strap is not tight around the neck and that the cat can walk, turn his head and groom. Keep the wear time short, offer treats and take it off if he seems stressed. In a yard, supervise closely, because a startled cat in a costume may try to run.

The mane is golden, the stare is fierce and the roar is, thankfully, left to the imagination. He may just be the gentlest lion in the world, and for tonight he rules the leaves, with a full audience of squirrels and one very proud family.
