The Spider Web Decoration Caught Something Much Bigger Than a Bug

The cobwebs were meant for the doorway, but a cream British Shorthair has become part of the display. He stands with one front paw lifted, wrapped in strands of white stretchy webbing, and a small black plastic spider clings to the threads beside his ear. His round gold eyes look unimpressed, as if this happens every October. Behind him, a jack-o'-lantern and a pile of shoes mark the entryway of a house in the middle of decorating.

Fake spider webs are fun but can be dangerous for pets. The stretchy fiber can wrap around legs and necks, and if a cat chews or swallows it, it can cause an intestinal blockage that needs emergency care. Plastic spiders are small enough to be swallowed too. If your cat becomes tangled, stay calm, hold him gently and carefully remove the strands rather than letting him thrash, and call your vet if he swallowed any. Place webbing where pets cannot reach, or use a different decoration. British Shorthairs are calm, dignified cats, and this one handles the whole situation with admirable patience.

A few moments of untangling and he will be free, and probably a bit offended. In the meantime, he is the best Halloween decoration in the neighborhood, and he does not even know it. A bit of patience, a gentle hand and a treat will put everything right.
