A Schnauzer Puppy Waded Into a Deep Pile of Orange Leaves

AI imageminiature schnauzerhalloweenautumn leaves

Standing in a drift of crisp orange maple leaves, a black and silver Miniature Schnauzer puppy has paused to look at something off to the side. The leaves cover the ground in rusty shades, and a trio of round pumpkins sits just beyond, shining in the afternoon light. Behind them, a box, some boots and a doorstep show that this yard belongs to a house that does a lot of fall decorating.

Leaf piles are one of the joys of autumn for dogs, but there are a few things to watch. Wet leaves can hide mold, sharp sticks and bits of trash, and some dogs eat leaves, which may upset their stomachs. If you have a pile near a road or in a yard where chemicals have been used, check before you let a puppy dive in. Wipe off the paws and check the coat for burrs when you come back inside.

Miniature Schnauzers have lively, curious personalities and a tough, wiry coat that handles weather well. They like having a job to do, and a yard full of leaves provides plenty of scents to investigate. Their eyebrows and beard collect leaf bits like magnets, so a good brushing is part of the routine after outdoor fun. Short daily walks and play keep them happy.

The puppy is clearly deciding where to start. Somewhere in that pile there is probably a perfect stick or a good smell, and the search is just beginning.
