A Shiba Puppy Got Himself a Spoonful of Pumpkin Pie Filling
Perched on the edge of the kitchen counter, a black and tan Shiba Inu puppy licks a spoon of orange pumpkin filling. The tongue is out, the dark eyes are focused and a bit of orange has smeared across the muzzle. Beside him, a bowl and a pie shell wait for the filling, and crumbs and dish towels cover the counter.
Plain cooked pumpkin is often used as a gentle treat for dogs in small amounts, but pie filling is another matter. It usually contains sugar, spices like nutmeg and sometimes sweeteners that are not safe for pets. Too much can upset a puppy's stomach. If you want to share pumpkin, use plain canned or cooked pumpkin without sugar or spices, and ask your vet about the right amount.
Shiba Inus are clever, curious and bold, and a puppy on a counter is typical of the breed's resourceful nature. They can be very independent and enjoy exploring. Teaching your dog to keep four paws on the floor is a useful skill, especially in the kitchen. Providing a lick mat with a safe treat is a good way to give a puppy a similar thrill.
He seems very pleased with himself. The pie will probably be fine, but the spoon has seen better days. A quick wipe of that orange muzzle will be needed, but not just yet.
