Three Stockings Hung Above and One Giant Dog Slept Below
Three red and white stockings hang from a mantel draped in pine garland, and below them, a very large Saint Bernard has fallen asleep with his heavy head on the carpet. His jowls droop, his eyes are closed, and one big white paw reaches toward the camera. The room is peaceful, with a basket, a soft chair, and a gentle glow of afternoon light coming in from the side.
Saint Bernards are giant dogs, once used in the Swiss Alps for rescue work, and today known as sweet, patient family pets. They tend to be calm and gentle, though a puppy can be clumsy and very strong. They also drool, and they are happiest in cooler spaces, so a warm room near the fireplace may be best kept at a safe distance. Make sure a dog this big has a comfortable, supportive bed to protect his joints.
Before the family goes to bed, keep an eye on fireplaces and stockings. A screen should stand in front of any fire, and stockings should be hung where a dog can't pull them down. Remember that candy and chocolate in stockings can harm dogs. This sleeper isn't interested in any of that, though. He's off in a dream, big, quiet, and content, and the stockings above him are the best guard a giant could ask for. The only sound in the room is a slow, deep breath, and the stockings above him barely stir. It's easy to see why he's the family's favorite pillow.
