The Smallest Lion on the Block Took Over the Front Lawn

The lion of the neighborhood is about six inches tall. A small white kitten sits on the lawn in a fuzzy brown mane that frames her face, with two pink-lined ears poking out the top and little ties dangling beneath her chin. She gazes up with round green-gold eyes, and her front paws are planted neatly on the grass. Behind her the porches along the street are glowing in the evening light, with a few pumpkins on the steps and fallen leaves scattered about. Let's call her Leo, short for Leona.

Lion costumes are among the more cat-friendly outfits, because the mane sits around the head without covering the eyes or mouth. Still, a few things are worth checking before a kitten wears one. The ties should be loose enough that you can slide two fingers under them, and she should be able to turn her head, walk, and groom without trouble. Try the costume on for a couple of minutes at home first, with a treat or two. If she freezes, flattens her ears, or tries to back out of it, take it off. Plenty of cats simply aren't costume fans, and that is perfectly normal.

White cats have their own care considerations: those with very light skin on the ears and nose can be prone to sunburn if they spend lots of time in bright sun, and some white cats with blue eyes can be deaf. Your vet can check and advise for your particular kitten, and indoor time with sunny window naps is usually enough.

For tonight, though, Leo is the mightiest roarer on the block, even if her roar is a little squeak.
