A Kitten Dressed as a Pumpkin Sat Guard on the Dark Doorstep
It is nearly dark, and a tabby kitten in a plush pumpkin costume sits on the front stoop with her eyes wide open. The costume is soft orange with a little green stem on top, and her striped face sticks out the front. Behind her, a wreath hangs on the dark door, a small pumpkin glows with a flickering light, and a few leaves and gourds are tucked along the step. A pair of shoes and a jacket sit off to the side, as if the family just rushed out. We'll call her Pumpkin, naturally.
Tabby is not a breed but a coat pattern, found in many kinds of cats, and the classic stripes and the letter M on the forehead are common features. Because tabbies come from all sorts of backgrounds, their personalities vary a lot, though many are known to be sociable and playful. A mixed-breed shorthair like this one is a great all-around companion and often a healthy, sturdy pet.
Dressing up is one of the happiest parts of Halloween for many families, but a kitten's comfort comes first. Choose a costume that fits loosely, doesn't cover her eyes or ears, and leaves her tail and legs free. Skip anything with buttons, bells, or glued-on bits that could be chewed off and swallowed. Keep dress-up to short sessions with plenty of praise, and never leave a kitten alone in a costume. Pets can get overheated or stuck, and the outfit comes off the moment she looks unhappy.
Pumpkin looks relaxed enough, though. She sits on the stoop in her orange suit, an ideal greeter for anyone coming up the walk.
