A Brindle Frenchie Watched the Trick-or-Treat Parade From Her Window
With his front paws up on the windowsill and his big bat ears at attention, a brindle French Bulldog stares out at the street. Outside, in the blue light of dusk, three small trick-or-treaters walk along the sidewalk: a little one in an orange pumpkin suit holding a bucket, a ghost in a white sheet, and a witch in a black hat and cloak. Glowing jack-o'-lanterns line the lawns beyond. Inside, a plaid jacket hangs on the wall and a basket of shoes sits by the door. Let's call him Tiger Lily. She has seen the whole parade, and she has questions.
French Bulldogs are curious, people-oriented dogs, and they love to be wherever the action is. A window perch lets her keep an eye on the neighborhood, which is a form of enrichment for a dog who might not get long walks. Frenchies do best with moderate activity and cool spots to rest, since their short noses make heat and heavy exercise hard on them. They can be vocal when something catches their interest, so don't be surprised by a few snorts or a bark.
On Halloween night, a window is a safe vantage point for a dog who gets excited by the doorbell. Many owners place a comfy cushion at the window, give a chew toy, and keep the dog in a quiet room away from the door, so she isn't tempted to dash out or startle visitors. Keep candy and treats out of reach, and make sure she wears a collar with an ID tag. If she gets overwhelmed by the noise, talk to your vet about ways to help.
Tiger Lily sits at her post, watching the little ghosts go by. It is the best show in town, and she has the front seat.
