A Cavalier Spaniel Fell Asleep Next to the Porch Scarecrow

Curled into a perfect crescent on the porch boards, a chestnut and white Cavalier sleeps with his chin resting on the wood and his silky ears draped down. His long, feathered tail is tucked beneath him, and his eyes are closed in contentment. A scarecrow in denim overalls, a red plaid shirt, and a floppy straw hat sits beside him, arms dangling with straw. A pumpkin sits on the ledge, a pot of mums stands near the wall, a warm lantern glows on the house, and dry corn stalks lean by the post. Let's call him Chester. The porch has never been quieter.

Cavaliers are affectionate, gentle spaniels, known for being excellent lap dogs. They like to be near their people, and they often sleep curled close to someone, even a scarecrow. Their silky coats need regular brushing, especially on the ears and feathering, to prevent tangles. They can be prone to certain heart conditions, so regular vet visits and keeping a healthy weight are important parts of their care.

Adult dogs typically sleep around twelve to fourteen hours a day, and a sleeping dog is usually a content one. If your dog naps outdoors, make sure the spot is comfortable: boards can be hard and cold in autumn evenings, so a blanket or bed helps, especially for older dogs or ones with thin coats. Check that he can't chew on straw or decorations nearby, and bring him inside when the temperature drops. A short nap outside is nice, but keep an eye on the time.

Chester sleeps on, undisturbed. The scarecrow keeps his watch, and the porch light glows for a very sleepy dog.
