Juniper Spotted the Path in the Snow and Took It at Full Speed
With ears flopping and a pink tongue just visible, the blue merle Border Collie puppy trots straight down a snowy path as if he has somewhere important to be. His marbled grey and black coat blends with the winter dusk, while his white chest and front paws stand out like bright little socks. Behind him, a cabin-style porch glows with a warm light and pine trees fade into the evening. The ground is only lightly frosted, with brown leaves still poking through, which tells you winter has just arrived and this is among the first snowfalls.
Border Collies are among the most energetic and intelligent herding dogs, bred to work all day. Even as puppies, they love having a job, and a snowy path is a great place to play games like fetch or follow-me, which engage the mind as well as the body. Because they can be intense, young Border Collies need steady, gentle training and plenty of mental exercise, or they may invent their own work, like herding children or chasing shadows.
Merle coats are beautiful, and the pattern can even make a puppy's eyes look two different colors. If a dog's eyes or coat are unusual, a regular checkup with your vet is the best way to keep everything healthy. A snowy path is also a good place to practice recall, rewarding a pup each time he turns and comes back to you.
Maybe his name is Juniper. He's not lost, he's just very focused, and the path to dinner has never looked so straight.
