Nico the Chihuahua Pulled the Sled Like He Was Leading a Team
Wearing a snug tan harness and a very determined face, the little black and tan Chihuahua puppy leans into his work, pulling a small wooden sled across the snow. The tracks of the sled runners trail behind him. His fluffy tail curls over his back, one ear points up, and the pale evening sky glows behind the neighbor's fence and the bare shrubs beside the house. A little jingle of the harness clip catches the light, and the wooden slats of the sled look old and well loved.
Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed, but they're well known for their big personalities. They tend to be confident, loyal, and attached to one person or family. Because they're so small, they lose body heat quickly, so a snug coat or sweater and short outings are important in winter. Make sure any harness fits well and doesn't rub, and never ask a tiny dog to pull anything heavy.
Harness training is helpful for small dogs, since it spreads pressure across the chest instead of the neck. Introduce it slowly, with treats and praise, so the pup learns it's a positive thing. Talk to your vet about winter safety for toy breeds if you're unsure. A harness with a soft lining and a light jacket will make the whole outing more comfortable for a tiny dog.
We'll call him Nico. The sled is empty and he's working harder than any sled dog, and he'd like you to know that it counts.
