A Sleepy Cavalier and a Scarecrow Share the Porch Like Old Friends
On the weathered porch boards, a ruby-red Cavalier lies with his chin on his paws, eyes closed and ears spread like silk curtains. Right beside him sits a scarecrow in a straw hat and orange-and-black plaid shirt, with a smile stitched across his face. A few autumn leaves have blown onto the deck, and a pot of mums glows beside a pumpkin.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known as sweet-tempered, gentle dogs that love being close to people. They tend to be happy to curl up beside you on the couch or the porch and are often described as good-natured with both children and other pets. Their long silky ears need regular brushing and checking, and your vet can advise on grooming and routine health checks.
Decorative scarecrows made of straw and fabric are a classic fall sight, but dogs may chew on them. Straw can irritate the mouth or stomach, and bits of fabric or twine are a hazard if swallowed. It is smart to place decorations a little out of reach, or supervise a curious dog. Napping beside a scarecrow, however, is perfectly safe.
Judging by the snoring, the Cavalier has decided the scarecrow is excellent company. He asks no questions and never steals the good spot. Every few minutes one ear twitches, as if a very good dream were passing through, and the scarecrow keeps his smile.
