The Candy Bowl Was Right There and the Goldendoodle Was Being So Good
A big, curly red Goldendoodle sits by the front door, and next to him is a bowl heaped with wrapped candy. He is not touching it, not exactly, but his eyes look upward with a hopeful expression, and his nose is pointed right at it. The door behind him wears a fall wreath, and a small pumpkin and a rack of coats sit in the entry.
Goldendoodles are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, and they are usually friendly, bright and eager to please. Many are very food-motivated, and they tend to learn quickly, so a patient trainer can teach a firm leave it. Because each dog inherits a different mix of traits, personalities and coat types vary.
Halloween candy is one of the biggest hazards for dogs. Chocolate is toxic to them, and sweeteners such as xylitol, along with raisins and wrappers, can cause serious problems. Keep the candy bowl off the floor, away from counters and out of reach, and store extras in a closed cupboard. If your dog eats candy, call your vet or a pet poison helpline right away.
This good boy waits with admirable patience. His tail is probably wagging out of the frame, and the candy remains safe, for now. A single bark from the doorbell will likely change the mood, but for this quiet moment the sweet, sensible dog is the picture of restraint.
