A Blue Great Dane Puppy Won the Tug of War Over the Red Ribbon
Big paws on the present and a red ribbon between his teeth, a blue-grey Great Dane puppy tugs away. His wrinkled forehead is crinkled in concentration, his ears flop forward and his big, wide-set paws seem too large for the rest of him. Behind him a sunny living room is filled with a Christmas tree, a basket of pinecones and a pair of slippers scattered on the rug.
Great Dane puppies are famous for growing fast and ending up as some of the tallest dogs on earth, but they are very gentle at heart. They are friendly, affectionate and eager to please, and while they are puppies they can be clumsy and mouthy. Early training, gentle handling and age-appropriate exercise help protect growing joints, and your vet can guide you on the right plan.
Ribbon is a favorite puppy toy and a real hazard. If swallowed, it can cause a serious blockage, which is an emergency. Keep ribbons, string and tape out of reach, and give him a sturdy chew toy instead. Supervise unwrapping time, and clear away wrapping materials quickly. If you think he swallowed some, call your vet immediately.
For the moment, the ribbon is in a tug of war and he is winning. He looks very pleased, and the present has no idea what hit it. When the ribbon finally comes loose, he will probably trot off with it like a trophy.
