Grandpa Raises a Ginger Kitten to Help Top the Christmas Tree
A grandfather with a gray stubble beard and a soft green shirt holds a ginger kitten high in the air, as if she were about to be crowned. She dangles with her paws up and her eyes wide, looking straight ahead, while the Christmas tree glows beside them. A golden star sits at the top, burlap bows and little wooden ornaments dot the branches, and orange evening light pours in from the window.
For many older adults, a pet brings routine, comfort and company, and the holidays can be an especially cozy time to share it. A purring kitten on a warm lap can make a house feel livelier. At the same time, an older person should think about practical matters, such as tripping hazards, litter box placement and who can help if a pet needs care.
As for lifting a kitten, the safest way is to support both the chest and the hind legs so she feels secure, and to keep her lifted only briefly and close to the body. Kittens can wriggle suddenly, so it is best to stay low over a soft surface. Your vet can show you good handling techniques.
We will call the kitten Marmalade, and her tree-topper career looks promising. Grandpa seems pleased, the star is nearly within paw's reach, and the room is warm. It is a fine holiday job for a very small helper.
