Ranger the German Shepherd Guards Every Pumpkin in the Patch
Pumpkins in every size crowd the ground around a sable German Shepherd, who sits tall in the middle of them with his ears at full attention. His coat blends black, tan and gold, and his dark muzzle is turned slightly to one side, as if he heard something over the hedge. Vines and dry leaves wind through the patch, and a house with a lit window glows warmly behind him in the evening light.
German Shepherds are known for intelligence, loyalty and a strong drive to work. They tend to bond closely with their families and do best with regular training, exercise and a job to do, even if the job is learning new tricks or playing fetch. Early socialization helps them become confident, well-mannered dogs, and many are gentle with children when raised with care.
Pumpkin patches are a fun outing, but there are a few safe-dog tips. Watch for dried vines that can trip or tangle, avoid letting your dog chew on stems or rotting pumpkins, and keep him leashed near crowds. Large breeds also need plenty of water on warm fall days. A little plain, cooked pumpkin can be a healthy treat for many dogs, but your vet can suggest an amount for your dog.
We will call him Ranger. He is not interested in picking a pumpkin, because he seems to be guarding the entire patch. Anyone coming to borrow one will have to pass inspection first, and he looks like an excellent inspector.
