Nobody Thought a Great Dane Would Fit on the Sled. He Made It Work.
Fresh snow covers the yard, and a harlequin Great Dane named Domino has taken a seat on an old wooden sled, filling it from end to end. His white coat with black patches looks like a sculpture against the snow, his long ears fall to the sides and his gaze goes calmly into the distance. Behind him is a porch with a green wreath on the door, bare trees and a snowy slope.
Great Danes are among the tallest dog breeds, famously gentle despite their size, and often nicknamed gentle giants. Short coats and long legs mean they can get cold quickly, so a coat is a smart choice for winter play and breaks should be short. Check paws for ice balls and salt, which can irritate skin, and wipe them after a snow day. Because they are so big, a sled ride is best kept for a calm, flat spot with a person walking beside, as running downhill with a heavy dog could hurt him or a child. Large dogs also need good joint care, so talk to your vet about exercise.
Domino looks calm and quite pleased with this sled idea. He is surely the biggest passenger the sled has ever carried. Whoever pulls him will have earned a very large hot cocoa, and probably a very long rest afterward.
