The Aussie Puppy Dressed as a Pumpkin and Waited by the Door
A little red merle Australian Shepherd sits on the welcome mat in an orange pumpkin vest with a green stem and leaves on top. One blue eye and one soft brown eye catch the light, and the speckled coat blends into shades of copper and cream. White paws rest neatly on the mat, a fall leaf has drifted onto the step, and the open door behind shows a coat on a hook and shoes by the wall. A jack-o'-lantern is just visible at the edge.
Australian Shepherds are intelligent, energetic herding dogs, and a puppy of this breed needs a lot of mental and physical activity. They often learn quickly, so short training sessions with rewards are a great way to channel energy. Their coats come in many patterns, including merle, and eye colors can differ even in one dog. Because they like to have a job, puzzle toys and games are very useful. Always keep costumes simple and comfortable, with room for the legs to move, and don't force a puppy into an outfit it dislikes. Keep a close eye on a puppy near an open door, too.
We could call this little one Pumpkin Pie, but it's probably best to keep it short, like Penny. She sits quietly and waits, a tiny, thoughtful gourd on a doormat. Her ears and eyes follow every sound, which is exactly how a herding dog gets started.
