A Jack Russell Puppy Used His Best Manners at the Dinner Table
He is doing everything right: sitting tall, paws together, and gazing at the plate of mashed potatoes without so much as a whine. A white and tan Jack Russell Terrier puppy sits beside the table with his nose pointed upward, his wiry coat bristling a little at the ears. The plate holds a fluffy mound of potatoes with a sprig of herbs, and a plaid napkin rests nearby. In the background the kitchen is full of pumpkins, a sage-green cabinet, and a line of towels, and the room feels busy and bright.
Jack Russell Terriers are bright, energetic dogs that were bred for hunting, and they tend to be clever, athletic, and a bit stubborn. That means they often learn quickly, including the trick of looking adorable near a plate. Plain mashed potatoes are not toxic, but the butter, cream, garlic, and onions often mixed in can upset a dog's stomach or be harmful, so it is best not to share. A sit-and-stay lesson, or a safe treat or chew toy away from the table, keeps a dog happy and busy. Talk to your vet before giving any people food to a puppy.
He is showing excellent manners, which is exactly how a smart terrier plays the game. If politeness could win a dinner, he would already have a seat. His tail, one suspects, is wagging gently out of sight.
