A Tiny Pumpkin Appeared on the Step With Very Serious Eyes
Plush orange fabric puffs around her shoulders, a green felt stem sprouts from her head, and a brown tabby kitten sits on the concrete step with a soft, slightly worried look. Her blue-gray eyes meet the camera directly. Beside her are a pair of worn sneakers, a plant with orange mums, a doormat, and a metal door with a hinge. A few fallen leaves collect on the step.
Doorsteps are a great place for a kitten to watch the world, but they come with safety questions. A young kitten should not be left alone outside, and a front step by a busy street is not the place for an unleashed pet. Supervised time in a harness lets her enjoy sights and smells at a safe distance. Many cats find costumes stressful, so notice the signals: flattened ears, a lashing tail, or freezing in place all mean it is time to remove the outfit. Norwegian Forest Cat kittens like this one are usually sturdy and affectionate, and many love cuddles more than costumes.
Right now she holds still like a model with stage fright. The pumpkin outfit is cute, though, and the stem on top gives her the roundest, silliest silhouette on the street. After a moment the costume will come off and a treat will arrive, which is the best part of any holiday.
