One Red Ornament, One Low Branch, and a Very Determined Kitten

One paw is on the red bauble, and the kitten knows exactly what she is doing. A small black Devon Rex, with huge ears and a soft, wavy coat, crouches on a woven rug beneath the lowest branch of the Christmas tree and tugs the shiny ornament toward herself. Above her, a gold star-shaped decoration and a few other baubles hang from the green needles. Behind her sits a couch strewn with blankets and a cardboard box.

This is one of the most familiar scenes of the season, and it is easy to see why: dangling, shiny, swaying objects trigger a cat's hunting instincts. Devon Rex cats are known for being lively, mischievous, and people-loving, and they like to be where the action is. The best fix is to plan the tree for a curious kitten. Hang unbreakable ornaments on the lower branches and save glass for higher up. Avoid tinsel, which can be dangerous if swallowed, and keep hooks and small decorations out of reach. Secure the tree base or anchor it so it can not tip, and cover or hide cords. Offering a toy of her own near the tree can redirect the interest.

The Devon Rex coat is short and curly, and even the whiskers can be crinkled, which gives these kittens a pixie look.

For now the ornament has survived, and the kitten looks pleased with her treasure.
