Under Three Stockings, the Smallest Resident Slept Through It All
Three knitted stockings hang from the mantel, and just below them a gray Devon Rex kitten is sound asleep. He stretches out along a rustic wooden shelf with his chin on his paws, large ears folded softly back. Around him sit pinecones, a candle, a cozy mug, and a stack of books, with pine boughs trailing off the edge. A lamp glows warm in the background.
Kittens sleep much more than most people expect, often up to sixteen hours a day or even more, and the best nap spots are usually warm, high, and snug. A shelf near a fire or lamp ticks all the boxes. Devon Rex cats have thin, fine coats and often seek out warm places, so a heated corner is a favorite. Check that nothing near a nap spot is a risk: keep real candles away from curious paws and swishing tails, move any glass or breakable decor out of the way, and use a fireplace screen if there is a fire. Stockings can also be a hazard if filled with small items a kitten might chew.
Sleep is also how a kitten grows, so letting him nap undisturbed is one of the kindest things anyone can do.
The gift for this little sleeper was a warm shelf and a quiet afternoon, and he seems to think it is perfect.
